The WBTF has been informed that Cecilia Cruz passed away on Sept. 24th. She had been suffering from breast cancer for two years. She was a resident of Los Gatos, CA. USA
A celebration of Cecilia's life will be celebrated at the home of Roger McLean 890 Sheila Ct., Campbell, CA 95008 USA on Sunday, Sept. 27th at 2pm.
Cecilia was well known and respected by many in the twirling world............ a true baton twirling icon. She was the coach of many top level athletes, including the first U.S. World Team “the Cruzers” - World Champions and the Italian National Team. Cruz was a champion athlete in her own right – a former U.S. Grand National Strutting Champion. Cecilia had served as a USTA Board Member during the late 90’s and was instrumental in promoting the development of USTA’s first website.
Here is a short tribute from her brother Michael Cruz:
On the morning of Thursday, September 24, Cecilia Cruz McLean passed away. With all of the fire and fight left in her, she battled against breast cancer for over two years. And if you know Cecilia, she was feisty until the end. Eventually, Cecilia was too weak to continue the fight. With all of her family around, she knew it was time to let go.
I know Cecilia was quite grateful to the friends she made in the baton twirling world. It was a place that brought life and spirit to her creative soul. It will always have a very special place in her heart.
As her brother, I feel fortunate to be a part of her world -- to learn from her. And more importantly, be inspired by her.
During some of my personal discussion with her in last months, I know she was most proud of her loving daughter, Marissa McLean. And her grand daughter, Jayden. Both of them were the center of her.
I hope you will always remember her as I will. Spirited. Vocal. Passionate. She truly possessed the "never give up" spirit.
With many loving memories, her brother,
Michael Cruz
